SHAWL OF THE WEEK – Contrast and Complement by Inese Andzane

A SPECIAL EPISODE is up this week with my daughter Kiley – Knitting Question for Kiley on youtube; its 30 minutes in length and will be posted right after this video
TIPS OF THE WEEK
Photo by Savvyskeins, on Instagram, of the measurement of the wrist to your middle finger; exact measurement you need before you start your (toe up) heel
From Hunter Hammerson, on Instagram, of a trick to turn your skein to help with tangles.  When you’re working from the inside end, make sure the part of the cake that has the yarn coming out of the middle is facing up. When you’re working from the outside end, make sure the part of the cake that has the  yarn coming out of the middle is facing down.
ANSWER to a question from a viewer; how do you tell the difference from variegated and self-striping yarn.  Answer: it’s difficult to tell but variegated yarn has short color repeats so if you can follow a strand of yarn on the outside of the skein to see how long the color repeat is; self-striping yarn has longer color repeats.
ANSWER to a question from a viewer; do I go down a needle size for ribbing? No, I don’t. I don’t want my ribbing to pull in at the bottom of a sweater, I would prefer that it fall flat or straight down from the underarm.
Questions I asked Kiley if you’d like to try it with your family members:

Question of the week
From Textile Grad: I hear you mention that a skein has “x” yards/meters in 50 or 100 grams (based on the yarn label) and then identify the wt classification of the yarn: bulky, worsted, DK, etc. There seems to be some sort of relationship you are making between the classification and yds/100 grams. Can you provide a source for making that kind of determination?

How to Help a Designer list:
BUY A PATTERN – maybe every month; maybe you won’t knit it, maybe you just like it; You have lots of yarn for just that reason! be willing to pay for a pattern that might be slightly more expensive
GIFT A PATTERN – RAKs are awesome; tell a friend you appreciate them; give a birthday pattern; mark your favorite patterns as giftable: add to queue, then click box “Include this pattern on my wish list in favorites”
POST A PHOTO – of the pattern even; hashtag the designer
REPOST A PHOTO – just saying I like this pattern or designer
QUEUE A PATTERN – placing it in your queue helps it be seen by others, even just your other friends on Ravelry
FAVORITE A PATTERN – “hearts” below a pattern photo help others choose it
DO A KAL - with a friend or a group of friends, pick a designer and everyone show the love
BE A TEST/SAMPLE KNITTER – that’s support, helping out when a designer is on a deadline
POST PROJECTS ON RAVELRY – more projects often mean more sales
DON’T SHARE PATTERNS – don’t make copies for friends, encourage them to buy it
HASTAG THE DESIGNERS NAME – then knitters can click on the hashtag and see other things the designer has done
From Dreareneeknits “Just to clarify - it is never okay to give away a designer’s patterns for free without their permission. Not only are you violating their copyright, you are also completely disrespecting them as a business owner, artist, and person. My patterns support my family. You may not think it is a big deal, but as someone who works incredibly hard and only charges dollars for their work - it is a very big deal.”
From a post by Tracie of the grocery girls:
Respect the Designer - Buy the pattern link text
People are willing to buy a $5 cup of coffee  that costs pennies to make, takes minutes to prepare, is gone forever after one use.
Yet thousands of people will not pay a few dollars for a pattern that: costs money to design (yarn supplies, testers, etc.), took countless hours to create, can be used over and over again and lasts a lifetime.
Friends in Flight Kit - $55
yarn from Sun Valley Fibers; bag from Kitchen Counter Crafter; pattern from Irocknits Designs; also includes stitch markers and a small token
